After shopping in downtown Los Gatos this morning, I stopped at Vasona CP on
the way home. While standing here: 37.237920, -121.973168, next to an
uprooted tree, I heard a sapsucker calling. I spotted a very dingy immature
Yellow-belied Sapsucker across the creek in a tree I believe is approx here:
37.237681, -121.972891 (a small tree with red, orange, and yellow paint is
here, but you have to go to the other side of the creek to see it). The bird
was visible long enough to make the ID, then flew a short distance NE-ish,
probably not far. It had dark, dull, and streaky red crown. Face had black
and white stripes. Chin seemed white. White wing patch. Back had very
disorganized dingy barring. There was an adult Yellow-bellied in this area
Dec 2021-Jan 2022.
