Four of us piled into a single vehicle to stop along different viewing
locations at Wyandotte County Lake yesterday morning. With the cold spell
Saturday, a decent number of waterfowl had come in that night which wasn't
present the day before during Eagle Days. We had 42 swans, including both
species, and a handful of duck species.
After a couple hours at WyCo Lake three of us ran over to Kaw Point in
search of the Peregrine Falcon that Bryan White has been seeing on the
Kaw's bridges. We were fortunate to see an apparent male and female, both
with pigeon remnants on the bridge.
Mark Land is a patient and generous teacher. The two of us volunteered
both days on the weekend with the Eagle Days and were at the lakefront
below Schlagle Library with a scope and extra binoculars to lend them for
viewing. It was awesome watching and listening to him talk with people of
all ages about the birds and nature around us. While the live educational
birds from Operation Wildlife were likely the highlight for most visitors,
seeing the kids’ eyes light up as they looked through the scope and the
excitement of seeing a "Wild" bald eagle for the first time was darn
awesome.
