Today I led a group of 14 on a trip from the Calero Reservoir parking lot about half way to the main dam.
As hoped, we saw many pairs (and triples) of Western and Clark's grebes performing various courtship displays including head bobbing, water flicking, tail-feather fluffing, and the always entertaining rushing!
Of special note was a Rock Wren at the north picnic area.
We had a raptor bonanza! A distant adult Bald Eagle, White-tailed Kites, several Red-tailed Hawks, 3 Kestrels, a Cooper's and a Merlin flyover.
And what I think is probably a Ferruginous Hawk, but it looks kind of weird to me (photos attached). We at first thought it might be a leucistic or uncommon plumage Red-tailed because someone saw a Red-tailed fly into that tree, but later I found a definite red-tailed on the back of the tree. Opinions welcome.
Eared and Pied-billed Grebes, a Say's Phoebe, and all the other usual suspects rounded out the morning.
