Hi all - happy new year
It was a beautiful, crisp 37 degrees when we started our birding at the
Sunnyvale Bay trailhead off West Caribbean. We took the trail up around
the grassy landfill hill which gave us a great view of everything below.
We also saw the single *BARN SWALLOW* that was reported yesterday. It
was bugging with Tree Swallows and a few Violet-greens.
Both *SAY'S & BLACK PHOEBES* were hunting and a flock *WESTERN
MEADLOWLARKS* were observed along with dozens of *AMERICAN PIPPITS*. We
observed two *COMMON GALLINULE* and two *GREEN HERON* below us in the
channels. We also had over 70 *BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS *all sitting
in the sun along the water's edge of one of the channels. They may not
have been visible if you were down on a trail, but from our vantage
point they were easy to see.
One *RED-SHOULDERED HAWK* and one *RED-TAILED HAWK* were also perched
along the power lines. A female *AMERICAN KESTREL* was on the Google
side of the road throughout our morning.
