Many thanks to all the Tweeters who responded to my query about birding and safety in South Africa, both publicly and privately. I am so grateful you took the time to help educate me as my husband and I contemplate this Big Trip.
Pretty much everyone who addressed the safety issue said they had had no problems, that staying alert and taking sensible precautions (like not showing around a huge fancy camera and staying away from more sensitive areas) make it likely we’ll have an excellent experience. I was really glad to hear this, and feel very encouraged about going ahead and making the trip.
I also got a bunch of recommendations for excellent guides, so now I have a very useful list to refer to. I’m happy to share the list with those interested - just email me (info below).
