Here in Little Rock where I live, I'm not seeing big drop offs in species
numbers. When Ruth and I did our CBC feeder day, we had 29 species,
including an Eastern Towhee, which we hadn't ever seen at the water
feature. It was a lot colder that day, so John's observation makes sense.
What draws them to our place is the water feature, which is large and
relatively loud. Everybody comes for a drink, a dip, and a bath. The little
guys come for the midges (or whatever those bugs are) flying above the
water. Generally the drier it is, the more species and greater numbers we
get.
Not really a part of this particular discussion, but I'm wondering if any
extra precautions are in order for the bird flu that seems to be going
around.
