Michael and I went in search of the gulls reported yesterday by Colin Dobson at the Crittenden County Landfill. The main target was the immature CALIFORNIA GULL. Steve Warmack, Sarah Morris and Nancy Young joined us and, after searching the area thoroughly, we were able to relocate and photograph it. There are thousands of Ring-billed Gulls and a few Herring Gulls to distract you, but the California seems to prefer the flooded field about 1/2 mile south of the landfill. The landfill is near the Mississippi River and Colin was certain he might find some good ones, and was he right! In fact, this sighting brought his Arkansas number to 300. Congrats to Colin! In addition to the ubiquitous Ring-billed Gull, he reported a CALIFORNIA, ICELAND, LESSER BLACK-BACKED and several Herring Gulls. The presumptive California was in a flooded field about a mile south of the landfill with many Ring-bills.Because these young folks tend to use different communication channels outside of email, I'm sharing this here for those who still mostly use email. ;-)Information including location of the landfill. Note there is roadside viewing. But also check the surrounding fields for loafing gulls. https://birdinghotspots.org/hotspot/L22464432Happy New Year to All,Patty McLeanConway AR
