Happy New Year!
Back on 12/21/2025, good field coverage resulted in 108 total species for the Stratford-Milford Christmas Bird Count. Among the highlights was the coastal CT Sandhill Crane show. All 16 (flocks of 3 and 13) were seen flying from the east, into the Count Circle. Different Milford parties found 2, then 4, then an amazing 6 lingering Semi-palmated Sandpipers. Multiple parties add significantly to party hours and bird totals. A very late Spotted Sandpiper was also discovered at Bridgeport's Captain's Cove. The Clay-colored Sparrow near Milford's Caswell Cove continued. All 3 "Euro" Gulls (Lesser Black-backed, Iceland, Glaucous) were found as well as Wood Duck, Snow Goose, Black Scoter, and Lapland Longspur.
Count week species included Common Eider, Ruddy Turnstone, Bonaparte's Gull, and Purple Finch. What was missed? Not much. We did dip on "pelagics" and all of the owls. Thanks to all participants for another successful CBC.
There's still time to help with the few remaining CBCs this weekend. Refer to the COA website for contact information.
