[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]
Greetings! This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, December
26, 2025 at 11:00 pm. The highlights of today's tape are CASSIN’S
SPARROW, TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE, BULLOCK’S ORIOLE, WESTERN TANAGER,
SHORT-BILLED GULL, PACIFIC LOON, BROWN PELICAN, ROSS'S and GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, EURASIAN WIGEON, BARROW’S GOLDENEYE, BLACK-HEADED
GULL, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER and much more.
The CASSIN’S SPARROW at Montauk Point was still present there last
Saturday for a great Christmas Count first record and was seen along
the outer roadway edges at least to Thursday, but the impact of this
snowstorm is yet to be determined.
The TUNDRA BEAN- GOOSE was roosting at least to Wednesday again on
Dosoris Pond as viewed from Pryibil Beach in Oyster Bay and was noted
several days to Friday on the Nassau Country Club, thus so far
continuing in that area.
A BULLOCK'S ORIOLE was found today in East Islip, seen in pines around
the back parking lot at St. Mary's School as well as at a nearby
private home, and a WESTERN TANAGER appeared last Monday at
Morningside Park in northern Manhattan.
A SHORT-BILLED GULL was a nice find last Friday the 19th at Randall’s
Island, not reported there since but possibly still around.
A PACIFIC LOON was photographed today off Sunken Meadow State Park,
where other nice birds featured a ROSS'S GOOSE last Sunday and
Monday, BARROW’S GOLDENEYE continuing, and a BLACK-HEADED GULL
Thursday and today. Another ROSS'S GOOSE visited the West Pond at
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge during the week, and three GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were in Bridgehampton last weekend.
A EURASIAN WIGEON has continued at Hempstead Lake State Park through
today, when a drake BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was found off Sound View Dunes
Park in Southold, while a female BARROW’S has returned to New Croton
Reservoir in Westchester as of last Saturday. HARLEQUIN DUCKS include
five off Montauk Point last Saturday and seven off Rockaway Beach
Sunday.
Two BROWN PELICANS were still off Miller Field on Staten Island last Saturday.
A MARBLED GODWIT was still at Jones Beach West End today, and a
BLACK-HEADED GULL visited Plumb Beach last Saturday.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Jones Beach West End Monday, with another
plus three ICELAND GULLS at the Bellport Bay Yacht Club Tuesday, while
another GLAUCOUS flew over Green-Wood Cemetery Wednesday. Several
other ICELAND GULLS were also noted.
A VESPER SPARROW was at Breezy Point Saturday, a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW
is again visiting Montauk Point, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was at Jamaica
Bay’s West Pond Saturday, and a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was still
appearing in Carl Schurz Park in central Manhattan as of yesterday.
With a decent portion of our local Christmas Count period complete,
results from the earlier counts are slowly forthcoming. Brooklyn on
December 20th recorded 130 species, but we await details. Montauk the
same day recorded 127 species, with highlights including 7 HARLEQUIN
DUCKS, hundreds of RAZORBILLS, 2 BLACK-HEADED GULLS, VESPER SPARROW,
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE, and of course the CASSIN’S
SPARROW.
The Queen’s count on December 14th netted 125 species including a
first record of ROSS’S GOOSE, plus 12 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS,
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and INDIGO BUNTING. The Greenwich-Stamford Count
on December 14th, including parts of Westchester County, netted 116
species including 3 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, HARLEQUIN DUCK,
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, TENNESSEE WARBLER and INDIGO
BUNTING.
