The Sunday morning Winter Wren viewing event along Escondido Creek was attended by over 40 birders, which combined with the almost 40 yesterday will hopefully take care of most of the interested parties! Just to be clear, one's chances of seeing the bird at all well without the use of playback is very unlikely given the large amount of thick vegetation it can hide in and which you cannot directly access. You have to have the bird come out to near the edge of the path. Today, in response to playback, the bird would vocalize a bit more from time to time, but it only started out making very quick darting flights in and then would immediately fly back away and bury itself, unlike yesterday when it was spotted mousing around in the vegetation near the speaker. However, today after fits and starts of the bird doing that, it finally decided to sit in the open for two long periods of time on some low palm fronds at moderate distance and constantly call back. So people got reasonably good views and plenty of photos. From this point on, unless someone else wants to organize a group, which I'd recommend at this point giving the bird several days off And schedule such for next weekend, then otherwise you're on your own! There is no reason to think the bird won't stay at this area all winter and remain into February or March. But it's responsiveness to recordings already is perhaps slightly less today, Or at least one can say it is certainly different, than it was yesterday, and we got lucky that it kept picking these open perches to sit on in the low palm.
