Happy New Years all! I went down to the Jones Bridge-Perry Rd. area twice today - morning and late afternoon. In the morning I saw the small flock of sparrows along Perry Rd. (east of River Rd.); I’ve been seeing 5 to 7 either at the roads edge or in the small brushy areas around each telephone pole. Some are Savannah’s, a least a couple Songs, and this morning a Snow Bunting. Late this afternoon (c. 3:45 to 4:45), there were two (and maybe a third) Short-eared Owls flying about, chasing each other and digging in the grass field. There were also a couple Harriers doing about the same. I had three Bald Eagles (one adult two immature) on the field along Barratt Rd.
I then had a good mixed flock, 50 or more, of Snow Buntings and Horned Larks in the field south of Jones Bridge Rd. and east of Dutch Corners Rd. - at least one Lapland Longspur in with them. Our snow last night made them all easier to find. Earlier in the day I drove up through York (going to the first day greenway walk, from York Landing) and saw several small groups of birds flying up from the edges of the plowed roads (mostly horned larks and juncos). It’s a good time time to check edges of snowy fields!
