Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Interesting pipit at Kit Carson Park
This morning I found a noticeably darker marked pipit with a flock of
Americans at the southern softball fields at Kit Carson Park, Escondido.
I'm not confident enough to call anything without further input, and id
tips on separating American from Siberian would be appreciated. The most
obvious field mark was a much darker malar triangle than usual
with extensive black streaking and a lighter belly resulting in a stronger
contrast between underparts and upperparts than the other pipits. The flock
consisted of approximately 10 birds and moved between the two fields
closest to the parking lot. I'm attaching photos which have been minimally
lightened in post due to the sun direction and were taken through a chain
fence as the fields were not open today.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
