Thanks so much to all who participated in yesterday’s Rancho Santa Fe area Christmas Bird Count!
Sorry for the delay, but results have not been received from all groups yet. The preliminary count is a very respectable 191 species (last year saw 189 species). Rarities included male Eurasian wigeon at San Elijo Lagoon, greater scaup off Del Mar, white-winged scoter off Cardiff, common goldeneye at Lake Miramar, common poorwill near Torrey Pines HS, marbled murrelet off Del Mar, reddish egret at San Elijo, yellow-crowned night-heron at Del Mar Public Works, adult bald eagles at San Elijo and Lake Hodges, vermilion flycatchers in Encinitas/Las Verdes Park, Solana Beach/Sun Valley, and San Dieguito River Valley, plumbeous vireo at Carroll Creek/Sorrento Valley, winter wren in Olivenhain/Escondido Cr, Swainson’s thrush at Encinitas Community Park, Lawrence’s goldfinch in San Elijo Hills, Louisiana waterthrush in Solana Beach/Stevens Creek, northern waterthrush at San Elijo, black-and-white warblers at San Elijo and Stevens Creek, Tennessee warblers at Ashley Falls Park and Sun Valley/Solana Beach, northern parula at Torrey Hills Park, Grace’s warbler on Crest Dr/Encinitas, summer tanagers at Rancho Santa Fe/Richardson Field and Carroll Creek/Sorrento Valley, western tanagers at Encinitas/Botanic Garden, Olivenhain/Escondido Creek, and Felicita Park, and rose-breasted grosbeak at private feeder in Rancho Bernardo.
Rarities reported count week but missed on the day of the count included greater pewee, white-throated sparrow, and swamp sparrow.
