Fifteen birders from Arkansas and neighboring states toured the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica Dec 14-21, 2025. The tour was guided by the legendary Esteban Biamonte of Sun Tours. The tour raised $800 for the Arkansas Audubon Society Trust, given in memory of Prof. Douglas James's 100th birth anniversary (for a total of $2400 raised via three tours, thanks to AR-birders).
Highlights of the tour include:
* 243 species of birds: https://ebird.org/tripreport/443592* Eighteen species of hummingbirds including rarities or endemics like Coppery-headed Emerald.* Encounters with several coveted herps like fer de lance and eyelash vipers* Great views of specialties like Resplendent Quetzal and Snowcap (hummer).* Close views of hard-to-see rails White-throated and Yellow-breasted Crake* Nicaraguan Grackle sightings, a very range restricted species* Over 200 species of wildlife documented in iNaturalist: Arkansas Audubon's Costa Rica Bioblitz 2025* Birding amidst the sights and smells of an active volcano with its fuming pits, fumaroles, and bubbling hot springs.
