The 72nd Morro Coast Audubon CBC was held last Sunday, December 14 with a preliminary total of 198 species which equals our long-term average. Over 140 volunteers participated in this year’s count, and were treated to mild temperatures, light breezes, and partly cloudy conditions throughout most of the day.
Data compilation is underway and it will take some time before official results are submitted to National Audubon, but some of the more unusual species that were seen included the continuing female King Eider, Long-tailed Duck, both White-winged and Black Scoters, Parasitic Jaeger, Manx Shearwater (new for the count), Least Bittern, a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Clay-colored Sparrow, Tennessee Warbler, Black-and-White Warbler, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. We also had six species of owls including American Barn, Western Screech, Great Horned, Burrowing, Short-eared, and Northern Saw-whet.
A few species that were documented within the CBC circle during “Count Week” but not on Count Day included Wandering Tattler, Prairie Falcon, Harris’s Sparrow, Orchard Oriole, Bullock’s Oriole, and Black-headed Grosbeak. A summary of the 2025 results with a complete list of species and their abundances should be available on the MCAS website sometime in January.
