Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Dec 18 Thursday Birding Meetup Recap and future info
Winter birding means appreciating each and every bird you see! Ten of us
tramped across crunchy snow and iffy ice at this morning's Thursday Birding
Meetup at the lower section of Robert Treman State Park. We only saw 8
species (29 birds total) but loved the pileated, red-bellied and hairy
woodpeckers, a lovely eagle fly-by and a surprise showing of 15 goldfinches
along the way (thanks for ebird, Tracy McLellan!). Our curiosity was piqued
by lots of mammal tracks to decipher and the scene of a small bird (wren??)
that met its end, probably from a Cooper's or sharpie as we noted the wing
and claw marks in the snow along with scattered small feathers. Seeing the
frozen lower waterfall by the summer swimming hole was a lovely treat to
cap off our time together. Six of us tried out the new coffee shop/bakery
in Newfield, Morning Moon, right next to the covered bridge. Stop by and
check out this cute place if you're in that neck of the woods.

NO THURSDAY BIRDING MEETUP ON DEC 25 OR JAN 1.

We will resume our Thursday birding on Jan 8 at 7:30 am at a place to be
announced. Start off your New Year with the Christmas Bird Count on Jan 1
and then plan to join us for our Thursday birding adventures as one of your
resolutions. We warmly welcome all birders and would love to see you on
Thursdays whenever you can make it.
