I was able to locate an Abert's Towhee inside San Diego County at about
7:15 AM, not far from the stakeout spot from last year. The bird was
vocalizing and continued to work WSW from the first point (33.42436° N,
116.08847° W). Other birders joined me at about 9:30 and after a bit of a
hike, we were able to relocate the bird.
The road was washed out upon my arrival, barely a single lane with soft
sand, large rocks and deep gullies was challenging even in my 4-wheel drive
Tacoma. After birding for about an hour and half, I heard
distant beeping and feared my truck was being towed. When I made it back,
there was a bulldozer and water truck sizing up the mess and had me
blocked in. I asked them at what point the road was going to be passable
as there would likely be folks from San Diego coming out to see a bird and
they said that they would address the impassable spot right away. Within a
couple of hours they had leveled and watered the road, but it is still VERY
soft, so if you travel out there, I recommend not going alone and bringing
a shovel just in case.
