Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] 2025 Oceanside CBC initial results
Hello Birding Friends,

Oceanside Christmas Bird Count started San Diego County’s 2025 CBC season
on Sunday, December 14. Congratulations and sincere thanks to our 133
volunteers for helping to make the day a success. We currently have 184
species reported, which matches our 20 year average. Once again, North
County birders were challenged by pockets of thick, early morning fog. Notable
rarities for the day include Blue-headed Vireo, Plumbeous Vireo, American
Redstart, Solitary Sandpiper, Orchard Oriole, White-winged Dove, Bald
Eagle, Cattle Egret, and Ruddy Turnstone.

Our pelagic team weathered the early fog and added their own rarities,
including Common Murre, Cassin’s Auklet, and Pink-footed Shearwater.

Introduced exotic species reported but not included in the preliminary
total include Black and Trumpeter Swans at Lake San Marcos, Indian Peafowl,
and the now very common Swinhoe’s White-eye. Eluding our count for the
second year was Greater Roadrunner. Final results are being tallied, and
will be posted soon.

It takes a team to run a CBC, and several people put in extra time to help
make ours a great experience. Special thanks to Paul Lehman for his advice,
scouting, and for conducting the compilation. Annette Schneider once again
provided a delicious chili luncheon. Joni Ciarletta is currently putting
her excellent data management skills to work, and Jane Mygatt will be
carefully reviewing the reports and data for accuracy.

Wishing you great birding in the New Year,

Patti Langen

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
