It’s Thursday afternoon, 2 pm, cool temperature, bright sunshine, a clear blue sky.



Suddenly I hear a muffled but unmistakable sound. Sandhill Cranes!



I look up and very high above are thirty sandhill cranes circling, their wings and bodies glinting in the sunlight.



After five minutes circling, they form a straight line and head rapidly south. I follow them until they disappear from view.



First sighting of the season. Winter coming.
