Subject: [sbcobirding] Santa Barbara Christmas Bird Count Scouting
Greetings SBCO Birders,

We are now just under 3 weeks away from the Santa Barbara Christmas Bird Count. Details (including a list of Target Species) can be found here:

https://santabarbaraaudubon.org/santa-barbara-christmas-bird-count

Thanks for all of your scouting reports thus far. We’re now getting to the point where birds that are found are more likely to stick around until count day, so please continue scouting. Report sightings of Target Species within the SB CBC Count Circle via eBird, SBCO Birding, Slack, or to me directly.

We will be tracking Target Bird sightings between now and count day using Steve Colwell’s wonderful tool BirdView. The link below will take you to a BirdView search showing Target Bird sightings between December 1 and Count Day within the count circle. (As December progresses the data for this search will be updated daily.)

Instead of visiting the most popular spots, it is helpful for us to get birding coverage at less-visited areas within the CBC Count Circle. Below is a BirdView search showing all checklists submitted during December 2024 (scouting season for last year’s CBC). Note the vast majority of the visits are to relatively few sites. Consider visiting some of the rarely visited spots – you might find something interesting!

Also, we’ve heard from some folks that they’re seeing more birds around their neighborhood than at their favorite birding spots, so a wander around your neighborhood may also turn up some interesting birds.

Thanks in advance and happy scouting!

Glenn Kincaid
