On Wednesday 15 participants birded the San Pedro House trails and recorded 49 species. This was a significant uptick in species compared to the last several walks that had total species counts in the low 30s. Interestingly, 19 of the species recorded were the result of seeing just one individual bird of that species. This included single Blue-winged and Green-winged Teals at Black Phoebe Pond and a single Virginia Rail at Kingfisher Pond. We also had single sightings of Lark Bunting, Bridled Titmouse, Orange-crowned Warbler, Common Yellowthroat and Spotted Towhee. The Western Screech-Owl was seen for the first time this year. Several participants saw a Louisiana Waterthrush near the Highway 90 bridge after the walk.
The Friends of the San Pedro River leads birding walks every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from the San Pedro House located south of Highway 90 just west of the San Pedro River. The walks last about three hours. During the next three months the walks start at 8:00a. Bring your own binoculars, a hat and water.
The next San Pedro House birding walk will be Wednesday, December 24 at 8:00a.
