This morning, 12 Dec, I found a dullish (female-type) Bay-breasted Warbler in the Serra Mesa area of San Diego. Unfortunately it is at a spot that simply can't tolerate a bunch of optics-wielding birders at all times of the day. Hopefully almost everyone who wanted to, saw the bird at the B&B back in early November. If this bird sticks around for a little while, I'll perhaps try to chaperone in a small group. And then once January rolls around and if it is till present then, we also may try something then. If you are truly desperate to see this bird sooner rather than later, please contact me privately. But if it is merely "optional," please let it be.
Nearby there was a Plumbeous Vireo, and I had two new Summer Tanagers in southern La Jolla today, to go with (yesterday) a Plumbeous Vireo at Mission San Luis Rey and another Summer Tanager in northern Encinitas.....snore!
For all those not keeping track, there appears to be a battle brewing between Summer Tanagers and Western Tanagers over who will come out on top for the winter-season total. More than a decade or so ago, this never would have been close, but Summer Tanagers continue to increase whereas Westerns seem to be dropping off a bit. So far the county total for the first 11 days of December is Western 30, Summer 25.
