Well, it was a good idea but our winter field bird foray today with the Thursday Birding Meetup did not yield many birds. Seven of us carpooled and caravanned through the backroads of Lansing in search of winter field birds like horned larks and snow buntings. No such luck. We did see some red tailed hawks, a Cooper/Sharpie in the distance, several crows and a few flybys of juncos and a cardinal. After exploring the uplands, we dropped down to Lagoda and Myers Point for a check in. We were surprised to see a lone snow goose resting in a lagoon. Otherwise, the windy point offered some gulls, mallards and coots. Duck hunters were out in force (gunshots!) and we witnessed a dog retrieving a mallard, south of Lagoda. We warmed up over breakfast at Eastshore Roadhouse. Want to join us next week? All birders are welcome to gather with us at 7:30 am. We bird until around 9 and then go out for breakfast. We are super casual and it is just fine if you bird for a while and then head out to work, class or other life calling you away from birds. Dec 18 Plans: Trails at Upper Buttermilk Falls State Park. While usually more active for birds in other seasons, we'll check out what's happening there now. From Ithaca, take 96B (Danby Road) south to the light at West King Road. Turn right and go .5 mile. The park entrance is on the left just before the bridge over Buttermilk Creek. Note: No Thursday Birding Meetups on Dec 25 and Jan 1 (we hope you will be doing the Christmas Bird Count with us on the 1st). Depending on snow and road conditions, perhaps we'll revisit some winter field bird opportunities when we next gather on Jan 8. Shelley Page *she/they/ki*
