Good morning everyone,
The heated birdbath is out! Still waiting for the northern finch fallout, but in the meantime the following sightings will do.
Two Brown-headed Cowbirds visited the feeder tray on Friday 12/05.
We drove to the Farm & Feed Store in Pine Grove for the bird seed sale on Saturday (12/06) and on the way back I spotted a bird soaring over the field across from our home. As we approached the intersection the bird circled low overhead giving us a good look at it's white rump and beautiful "Gray Ghost" coloring of a male Northern Harrier. It circled a bit overhead then took the same flight path back Westward over the field.
Over the past week or longer we've been hearing Great Horned Owls vocalizing at night. One night there were three- one was close and the other two, (deeper voice) were further away.
I often hear the local Ravens in the mornings when I'm returning the feeders to the yard.
Tuesday morning was the coldest yet - 3.4*! There were a few Canada Geese around a small patch of open water at one of the HV Golf Course ponds. Further down the road, an American Kestrel the launched from the wires to hunt the fields, then at home a Sharp-shinned Hawk flew into the dogwood and scattered the yardbirds. It sat for a bit, flew from tree to tree, then moved on without a meal.
The local yardbirds: Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, Northern Mockingbird (1), Mourning Dove, DE Junco, Song Sparrow, White-throated SP, White-crowned Sp, Tufted Titmouse, Chickadee species (after they disappeared for a while but their numbers are growing), House Finch, Goldfinch, Hairy, Downy, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, White-breasted Nuthatch, Eastern Bluebird, Carolina Wren.
Good birding & stay warm,
