Michael Kensinger called us this afternoon to tell us that Connor Schmitt had found Ross’s Geese at the Walmart Retention pond also known as Mason Spring pond. It is on the West side of Old Crow with the iron fence around it.
Greg and I had gone to see the Greater White-fronted Geese there and saw what we thought were Snow Geese. And we left.
Well that was a mistake!!
We got the call from Michael with Connor’s photo and drove down to see them again. While driving through downtown Huntingdon, we saw geese overhead and we got to the pond and nothing was there.
We decided that they might be on the Juniata River so drove to nearby Riverside Park and walked down to the kayak launch near the 4th Street bridge and indeed scoped and saw them east of the bridge on the Juniata.
Greg is going to check the pond and river area in the morning. Sometimes they sit in the park or are in the river near the park but may go and forage elsewhere.
It looks like this is the third record for Huntingdon county. Jon K had one on Lake Perez in 2011 and we had them on this little pond in 2017.
