Subject: [birders] Brown Creepers
I have several Brown Creepers in my yard and coming to my suet and to
peanut butter so I will tell you what works for me.
First learn their call. They do call all winter. I have lots of trees
and this helps me locate them.
Make sure a suet feeder is on the side of a tree - I have never seen a
creeper on any of the free hanging suet feeders. The ones in my yard
land lower than the feeder and work up the tree until they get to it
unlike nuthatches that fly right to the feeder.
If you can't do either, get a large branch, maybe 4-5 inches in
diameter and several feet in length (ours is about 5' long). We used a
hole saw to cut out holes about 1 1/4 inches wide - don't go all the
way through the branch; make them no more than an inch deep. We put a
heavy duty hook in one end and it hangs down from the 2x4 most of our
feeders hang from. Then fill the holes with suet or peanut butter. It
took a while for the Creepers to acclimate themselves to the branch,
but they do enjoy the peanut butter.
Can you tell they are one of my favorite winter birds?
