Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] Yard birds (and those flying over), Monroe County
This afternoon, I had grabbed my binoculars in an unsuccessful attempt to ID the flock of approx. 30 small birds that flew toward my feeders and then reversed abruptly and flew out of the yard to the north. A beautiful male Cooper's Hawk flew into the yard from the south and perched in the hackberry tree at the back of the yard for a moment. He then flew over and perched atop one of the feeders for a few seconds before departing. A Downy Woodpecker on the suet remained still as he sheltered himself from the hawk's view by clinging to the far side of the suet feeder.

I recently added a thistle feeder to the offerings in my yard in hopes of attracting the neighborhood goldfinches. The goldfinches will pick the seeds from the live sunflowers in the summer, but ignore my various sunflower seed feeders. After a few days, a single goldfinch has begun to visit the thistle feeder.

The MODOs are feasting daily on the white millet. I counted 55 of them on Dec. 2. Some large, sometimes noisy groups of crows have been passing over in the early mornings.

The mockingbird returned on Dec. 3 for a few dried pokeweed berries. And, much to my delight, the Red-breasted Nuthatch continues to visit the feeders.
