All,
I birded Goleta Beach and UCSB East Beach around both high and low tide yesterday.
During high tide there was still a fair amount of exposed sand on Goleta Beach and UCSB East although the latter was not safely accessible so I had to bird from the bluffs. There were a smattering of shorebirds and gulls at Goleta beach and some but not a lot of the same along UCSB East.
During low tide UCSB East was packed with shorebirds in the tidepools etc. As is often the case, trying to simultaneously count and ID birds was tricky because they were pretty flighty in response to tide poolers and beach walkers. I didn't find anything unexpected. The distribution of gulls was similar to those found at Goleta Beach recently including a (first year?) Iceland Gull and an adult American Herring Gull. There was a Red-throated Loon in Goleta Bay not too far from shore along with Surf Scoters and Western Grebes.
