Subject: [nysbirds-l] some Manhattan warblers, NYC - Friday, 12/5
Manhattan, N.Y. City - Friday, December 5th -

Among various warblers still lingering into at least today, Friday Dec. 5th, a Yellow-throated Warbler continued -photographed, the bird found high in a tree adjacent to East End Ave. but the tree just inside the park- at Carl Schurz Park as did at least 1 Nashville, 1 Orange-crowned, and 1 Myrtle-form Yellow-rumped among other warblers continuing there, mainly in the SW quadrant of that park, with some also crossing over the avenue to trees by a large apt. building with obvious ongoing construction or renovation, all this closest to East 85th St. for a cross-street reference. However the Nashville and an Orange-crowned also made forays over part of that park farther east, and to lower-lying sites which have ovals with shrubbery and still some remnant flowers as of this day, these nearer to the esplanade-promenade but sunk below the ground-level. The Yellow-throated Warbler in particular tended to feed surprisingly high in thin twigs of several trees at times, as has been seen for that species here in other recent days. Squirrels were dominant at the 2 feeders in this park having some suet, and not many birds seemed to get to the suet at least in early afternoon of Friday. A modest assortment of other native birds were noticed within the park itself. Among those was an actively hunting Red-tailed Hawk. Over in Central Park, at near the same cross-street latitude, several warblers continued to today which included several Nashville plus Palm, and also Orange-crowned in the same area, where some had been previously reported on the n. side of the East 97th St. transverse, however these warblers at mid-afternoon of Friday were also going high in multiple larger trees, and also may have shown interest in the workings of 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers which had been around some elms, beeches, oaks, and other trees on the s. edges of the East Meadow, as well as the S.E. perimeter area of the N. Meadow ball fields. It could be that any of these warblers, if they linger, might wander widely in coming days. A deep-freeze is expected region wide within days, and it will be interesting to see if insectivores such as warblers manage to stay, or perhaps move on.

Good birding and thanks to all finders, re-finders, and reporters of birds for this winter.
