Having been there myself, having the images in Lightroom where I can expand
the them to 200%, the bill size and shape, and possible malar on the bird
are questionable at best.
What isn't in question is the following:
It's a smaller woodpecker (than a Flicker).
It has a uniform dark back and matching head.
It can only be a female Black-backed. No other woodpecker in NA has an
entire head that matches its back, an the size is spot on for the species.
