Seen flapping once showing white secondaries on open wing. Slightly larger body than closely associated Surf Scoters. Looks like a female."

Gray ear coverts, flanks, and back. Dark gray wings. Red upper and under tail. Continuing bird seen on north side of creek, in euc about 20 feet above ground. Stayed several minutes and then flew south into thicker part of forest. 34°26′14″ N 119°53′15″ W."

All red male. Bird was found by John Lewis in Dec 2024 and again this year on 2 December."

- Comments: "Heard giving "pit-tuk-tuk" vocalizations, and then seen in the canopy of the flowering eucs near (34.414470,-119.559027). Female/immature type bird."
