Our Thursday Birding Meetup today served up chilly snow, some gulls, crows and a mysterious hawk. Twelve of us gathered on the Dryden Rail Trail near Stevenson Road to catch the action near the Cornell Compost facility. On cue, a "mass murder" (Paul's descriptor!) of crows and a mixed flock of gulls descended on the nearby fields after snacking at the compost piles. Fun fact, the Brits refer to a group of gulls as a scavenging or a squabble. Both apt words! Some of us were hoping for a surprise gull or two tucked in the crowd but, alas, the usual Herring, Great Black-backed and Ring Bills were hanging out. We were intrigued with a hawk seen on a distant tree through the snowflakes falling ever more quickly--a sharpie or Coopers?? The consensus was a "pretty sure" sharpie and we headed down the trail for a closer look but could not get a clear view. Not a lot of other birds were out and about, a smattering of some usual ones and a surprise cowbird. As always, we appreciate whichever birds we encounter and each other's company. Nine of us enjoyed breakfast at East Hill CollegeTown Bagels afterward. Want to join us next week? Dec 11 will focus on winter field birds. Our morning will be a bit different than usual. We'll gather at Sapsucker Woods at 7:30 am and then create carpools to do a driving tour in search of winter field birds such as snow buntings, horned larks and maybe a Lapland longspur! We will reconvene at East Shore Roadhouse in Lansing for breakfast afterward before we head back to Sapsucker for our cars. We will organize the carpools to accommodate the breakfasters and those who need to return earlier to get to work or elsewhere.
