Good afternoon, South Bay Birders,
On a king tide day that was a bit cold and windy, Dan Bloch and I led 12 "birding-since-COVID" birders on the trail around Sunnyvale WPCP. As we started up the trail, approximately a bizillion American Crows lifted up near the high voltage towers; we stopped counting at 250. Of note among the 33 species seen, was an adult Green Heron who joined 2 other high flying juveniles flying away from us (as usual). Lesser Goldfinches delighted us with their yellow in amongst the tules and the chain link fences. Plenty of Red-tailed Hawks of different plumages and ages, but always sporting those black patagials, were seen with the spice of a Cooper's Hawk making an appearance and showing off its hunting style. We all held our breaths to see if it had caught lunch. No lunch now in the life of this feathered predator! Nice surprises of the day were a shy Common Yellowthroat and, not 1, but 3 Say's Phoebes! At the end of the trip, in very nice afternoon light, was an adult Green Heron strutting its stuff on a raft of reeds.
Make sure you sign up for a Christmas Bird Count! Check out local counts here......https://scvbirdalliance.org/christmas-bird-count or see Jim Dehnert's most recent announcement for other counts not so local. No matter how long you have been birding, your skills are needed. Throw your bashfulness to the wind.........sign up and go have fun!
