The "Legacy" whale-watch boat at Seaforth Sportfishing at Mission Bay is offering another full day trip offshore for general natural history this coming Saturday, December 6. 8AM to 5PM. Similar to the trip they offered back on November 1st. These trips will look at all wildlife, so there will be a bunch more marine mammal looking compared to the usual birding pelagic trips. But the captain says that we will get appreciably offshore, exactly where presently unknown but at least to the outer Nine-Mile Bank and San Diego Trough--and the Nov 1st trip went all the way to the 30-Mile Bank. The marine forecast for Saturday is very benign, with light winds and only 2-foot seas currently forecast. Cost is $170. Lots and lots of space on the trip, so one can decide at the last minute. There will definitely be some birders aboard to help spot and identify stuff.
At this time of year, expect to see alcids, jaegers, late shearwaters, phalaropes, gulls, etc. Rarities are certainly possible.
