Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] orioles & tanagers, TK, suckleyi, Black Scoters
Yesterday, the 1st, right at dawn, the entrance, parking-lot edge to the San Diego Zoo currently has very view blooming coral blossoms as of yet, but there's one obvious, large, blooming Blue Gum eucalyptus adjacent to the "Koala 1" parking sign which hosted an adult male Orchard Oriole (presumably returning for its third or more years), female Bullock's, and at least 3 Western Tanagers.

Today, the 2nd, at Sunnyslope Park in Otay Mesa/Nestor, there were THREE Summer Tanagers simultaneously, a splotchy bird and two entirely mustard-yellow birds--likely the first time I've had three Summers all together near the coast (I've had two birds together quite a few times). Also 4 Western Tanagers in the park. A single adult male Bullock's Oriole (returning) at Montgomery Waller Park, 2 Western Tanagers along Del Sol Boulevard, and a female Bullock's and 2 Vermilions at Larsen Field across from the San Ysidro outlet mall.

Also today, the very dark, suckleyi-type Merlin continues at the Dairymart Ponds, today being on the east pond, where also a returning, continuing Tropical Kingbird with a few Cassin's. And on South San Diego Bay, scoping west of Bayfront Park/J Street toward Coronado Cays were two Black Scoters (adult male and female) mixed in the masses of Surf Scoters. This general area hosts typically around 3 Blacks every winter, with the highest counts of up to 6-8 birds. Also can be scanned looking back eastward from the end of Grand Caribe in Coronado Cays.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
