Reminder: in 30 days, the [California Bird Atlas](https://www.californiabirdatlas.org/) project goes live. Beginning January 1, 2026, you can start entering breeding bird data through the dedicated eBird web portal. Be sure to click the Join Project button to get started:
Which bird species are breeding in January? Hawks begin pairing up, and some can be seen carrying nest material. Male and female owls can be heard duetting. Both Anna's and Allen's Hummingbirds may already be sitting on nests in winter.
Check out this map detailing all of the atlas blocks in California (I prefer the OpenStreetMap layer):
Atlas blocks are based on 7.5’ USGS Topo Quads that are broken up into 6 smaller blocks (roughly 3 X 3 mile squares). Each block is named with the name of the topo quad followed by the position of the block within the quad.
More information will be forthcoming as the project gets underway, including how to properly submit checklists using the breeding bird codes.
