Subject: [sbcobirding] Red Crown Patch on NCOS Tropical Kingbird
Gayle and I saw two Kingbirds interacting very aggressively with vocal and visual displays in a bare tree on the north side of Venoco Rd (NCOS) near where the entrance to the Pond Trail is (34.417746, -119.876779).  One was a Cassin’s and the other a Tropical Kingbird. I thought I saw very brief flashes of red on the crown of the Tropical Kingbird and this was confirmed when I later looked at my photos. Apparently, this red crown patch is rarely seen or photographed on Tropical Kingbirds but is more frequently observed in Eastern and Western Kingbirds.
