On eBird rare bird report for Alameda County that arrived in my email this morning, a female Tufted Duck was reported at Lake Merritt. Seen along the path east of the Rotary Nature Center. I’m not sure how far towards the pergola from the bird islands.Female Tufted Ducks have a much smaller tuft than the males. They often hang out with their Aythya relatives, the scaups (same genus). Compared to a female scaup, look for a black back and almost no white around the base of the bill. When aTufted Duck is seen there, it usually stays for the winter.Maureen LahiffOakland
