The irruption of Red-breasted Nuthatch seems pretty well established around
the metro this year. We've had at least one here (east end of Macalester -
Groveland) for over a month.
It spent its first day making repeated, rapid rounds of our several
feeders, which are stocked with different foods, and flying off to cache
much of it. Now it hones in on its favorites to restock supplies, or works
a couple of plum tree stumps rich with insect life. It also enjoys long
drinks at the birdbath - especially gratifying for the opportunity to
watch them at close range, since they exhibit little shyness of humans.
