Crisp 24 degree temps greeted 18 birders for today's Thursday Birding Meetup at Hog Hole (Alan Treman State Marine Park). Our dedication was not unrewarded as we observed 315 birds of 30 species (thanks for ebird counts, Diane Morton!). We were fascinated to see a lesser black-backed gull hanging out amidst the ring-bills, herrings and great black-backs. A nice side-by-side comparison! It was lovely to encounter hooded mergansers and some buffleheads among the usual waterfowl. The wooded areas yielded a smattering of typical birds but some surprises, too including an American tree sparrow, brown creeper and some bluebirds. Goldfinches were out in force in the meadow areas. All in all, a birdy morning! Eight of us gathered at the Milkstand to enjoy breakfast and plot future Meetups and other field trips. All birders are very welcome to join us for these Thursday Birding Meetups. These casual gatherings are designed to be very flexible--leave for work etc. when you need to--and, if your schedule permits, enjoy some breakfast and conversation afterward. NO Thursday Birding Meetup on Nov 27. Enjoy watching turkey in a different kind of way. Dec 4 Plans: Meet us at 7:30 am on Stevenson Road, near the Cornell composting area. We will be checking out a variety of gulls and vultures who frequent the nearby fields. We may also bird along the Dryden Rail trail wooded areas. From Ithaca, take Rt. 366 (Dryden Rd) east. Turn right on Game Farm Rd and then left onto Stevenson Rd. Pull into the parking area adjacent to the Dryden Rail Trail, near Dodge Rd. Shelley Page *she/they/ki*
