Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] San Diego pelagic Nov 1st: Flesh-footed Shearwater, 2 Cocos Boobies, late 15 Sabine's and 3 Black & Ashy Storm-Petrels
An unofficial pelagic trip aboard "Legacy" out of Seaforth Sportfishing on a general natural history trip made it out as far as the 30-Mile Bank under very light sea conditions. Good numbers of Northern Fulmars have indeed arrived in our waters, with some individuals already in health distress. Also still good numbers of Pink-footed Shearwaters present, one very rare Flesh-footed Shearwater at the 30-Mile Bank, and two Cocos Boobies (including a pale-headed male). Surprisingly few alcids. The November 1st date also was illuminating for some late-season species and helped add a few "late-ish dates" to our local data. Totals for the day once we were over a mile offshore were as follows:

Surf Scoter  11
Eared Grebe  1
Red Phalarope  1
phalarope sp.  2
Pomarine Jaeger  14
Parasitic Jaeger  7
jaeger sp.  3
Cassin's Auklet  1
Forster's Tern  4  (as far offshore as the Nine-Mile Bank)
Elegant Tern  11
Sabine's Gull  15  (high count for the late date; mostly at 30-Mile Bank)
Bonaparte's Gull  3
Heermann's Gull  75
Western Gull  700
California  Gull  80
Pacific Loon  1
Common Loon  5
Ashy Storm-Petrel  1  (western SD Trough)
Black Storm-Petrel  3  (western SD Trough/30-Mile Bank)
Sooty Shearwater  1
Pink-footed Shearwater  180
Flesh-footed Shearwater  1  (30-Mile Bank; 30.6 mi W Mission Bay)
Black-vented Shearwater  210
Cocos Booby  2  (Nine-Mile Bank)
Brandt's Cormorant  50
Brown Pelican  550
Peregrine Falcon  1  (6 mi off La Jolla)
Northern Flicker  1  (came aboard 6 mi off La Jolla, released back at Mission Bay)
American Pipit  1
Dark-eyed Junco  1  (hopped around on boat all day and flew off back at dock)
Also:  Fin Whales, Humpback Whales, Risso's Dolphins

The 2026 schedule of BVAS-sponsored San Diego pelagic trips should be out no later than December, possibly sooner. Keep checking sandiegopelagics.com for more information.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://bvaudubon.org/birding-resources/ .
