Observation start time: 09:30:00 Observation end time: 12:00:00 Total observation time: 2.5 hours
Official Counter: Nate Marchessault
Observers:
Visitors: Two hikers and their dog visited while passing through on their hike to North Pack.
Weather: Rain first thing in the morning with low clouds throughout the count period. A few openings between the clouds around 10, then socked in for the rest of the count period. Other than the visibility, it was pretty nice up there, with with little wind and temps around 5 C.
Count ended early due to deteriorating conditions.
Raptor Observations: With the conditions, no raptors were detected. A Blue Jay, did a pretty convincing broad-wing call at one point though...
Non-raptor Observations: The observatory was teeming with songbird life all morning with at least 60 juncos milling about with a few White-throated Sparrows, chickadees, kinglets, and nuthatches. Robins and a Pileated Woodpecker were enjoying the Mountain Ash, and a flock of crows and two flocks of geese were heard flying by through the clouds.
Predictions: Tomorrow will be brisk, with a high of 25 F at the summit and stiff winds from the west/northwest. Visibility should be better, and some birds may be on the move! Tomorrow is also the last day the auto road is open, provided the road isn't icy from overnight precipitation. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Nate Marchessault (<nate...>) Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory information may be found at: www.harriscenter.org
