Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Nov 6 Thursday Birding Meetup Recap and Nov 13 Plans
Some of life's experiences are simply better when shared. Today's Thursday
Birding Meetup savored one of those collective moments of awe, wonder and
beauty as we watched a flock of mallards over the lake land right in front
of us. As they were flying, we remarked that one duck was notably smaller
but couldn't tell what it was until they got very close and landed--a
green-winged teal! Everyone shared that delight and surprise--a classic
birding moment, best shared in community. Eleven of us braved the windy
frigid conditions at Myers Point. The blustery tip yielded around 90 gulls
(Herring and Ringed Bills), the resident Trumpeter Swans and a few Canada
geese. Moving along the little edge habitat between the park and the
marina, we were thrilled to see four kinds of woodpeckers, including
pileated, and a selection of little woodland cuties like chickadees. Bird
nests are more easily revealed now and we saw Baltimore Oriole and most
likely catbird nests (loose construction and notable amounts of plastic
intertwined with twigs). Moving over to the calmer side of the marina, we
saw two surf scoters but had a discussion about whether they were surf or
white-winged, as they bobbed through the waves. We saw 23 species in total
(thanks for ebird, Diane Morton!) and were glad we showed up in spite of
the frigid morning. Eight of us went to the East Shore Roadhouse for
breakfast, a spot that has become a tradition if we're birding on the east
side of the lake. The waitstaff there knows us!

Wondering about next week's Thursday Birding Meetup? All birders are
welcome to gather with us at* 7:30 am*. Leave for work, class or other
activities whenever you need to--or join us for breakfast.

*Nov 13*: Robinson Hollow State Forest (Lacey Road Pond).Directions from
Caroline: take 79 east past Slaterville Springs for 4 miles, turn left on
Robinson Hollow Road, in 1 mile turn left onto Lacey Road, continue 1.6
miles to the pond entrance opposite a snowplow turnaround. Directions from
Dryden: take 38 south for 6 miles to the village of Hartford, turn right
onto Creamery Road, in 1.3 miles slight right onto Lacey Road, continue 1.1
mile to the pond entrance opposite a snowplow turnaround. We probably
shouldn't park in the snowplow turnaround itself.
