With some trepidation, I hereby report that the Painted Redstart on eastern Point Loma has returned for its second winter. Generally centered on 511 San Fernando Street, as last year. Hopefully the bird can get through the winter without be barraged by playback (wishful thinking?) and that the neighborhood can remain peaceful and quiet. Certainly the other current PARE at Holiday Park in Carlsbad is the better choice, given it is easier to find and is in a public park. Last year, for this Point Loma bird, I attempted to keep the bird semi-low-key at first, given that this neighborhood is not accustomed to all the birders visiting that the upper neighborhood along Silvergate is so accustomed. But before we could get "the pulse" of the situation, folks started freely and publicly sharing the exact addresses, plenty of photos were posted, and we were off the races (made even worse by the simultaneous presence there of a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker). Just one example of how trying to keep some "borderline" rarity locations under a wee bit of self-control can get fairly quickly out of control--so, finders, keep this in the back of your mind when you find rarities on or bordering even more potentially "sensitive" properties.
