Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Thursday meetup, and weekend field trips
This morning five of us met at Robinson Hollow, with a layer of snow
on the ground and light precipitation in the form of snow, which was
preferable to the drizzle outside my house when I left. A lone Pine
Siskin was heard flying by overhead as we walked across the dam to a
grove of spruces where red squirrels had been vocalizing, sounding a
little like Red Crossbills. Unsurprisingly, few birds were encountered
on this cold morning as we followed the trail west to the FLT and
lollipopped back, but we did hear some noisy Red-breasted Nuthatches
and see a few Golden-crowned Kinglets and a chickadee, a flyover flock
of some 40 Common Grackles, and next to a couple of noisy American
Goldfinches a flock of a dozen or so unidentified finches took off
making calls I was not familiar with. The Corner Brew in Dryden was a
good place to warm up after the pleasant morning hike.

Next Thursday we'll meet at Allen Treman Marina (Hog Hole), meeting
towards the northwest corner of the parking lot.

I'll also take this opportunity to remind people of two field trips
coming up this weekend.

On Saturday (November 15), Bob McGuire will be leading a morning field
trip up the east shore of Cayuga Lake, with a focus on ducks, grebes,
and loons. Meet at Stewart Park's east end parking lot at 7:30am. Trip
is slated to end at noon.

On Sunday (November 16), the Loon Watch will take place at Taughannock
Falls State Park from 6:48am (15 minutes before sunrise) until around
9:00am. Coming from Ithaca, turn right at the main entrance, then take
the left fork driveway, meet at the northernmost point on the east
side of the creek. The watch will be led by Jared Dawson, Stephanie
Herrick, and Scott Sutcliffe. Come dressed for the weather (there is
potential rain the forecast, but wind direction is looking good so
far).

Enjoy!
