I know this doesn't work for everyone and if everyone followed this advice it would be counter productive but if the Pipit does stay around a mid week view way from the mob is preferable. As Curtis vocalized last Sunday, pick a spot and it will come close. I was fortunate to be in the area three times last week and
on Halloween afternoon there were only a few birders present. The Pipit was in its favorite location (opposite the Treeview bridge below trees before the trail). At one point it was me and another birder, and we stayed in one place and the bird came within 1.8 m (too close for his autofocus), allowing excellent close up imaging.
I note the following. (1) Depending on the lighting the cheek, throat, and upper chest can appear pure white or buffy. If the light is right the throat is creamy orange/yellow. However, the spot behind the ear that is above the black spot is always white. (2) The back is a rich olive green. (3) While I have seen it jump for a fly (see https://www.flickr.com/photos/25876581@N00/54887477866/in/dateposted-public) or grab a worm it mostly likes small round (berries?) that it picks out from the dirt.
Some hi-res close up pictures and other photos/videos are found at https://www.flickr.com/photos/25876581@N00/with/54891421737 At this point on to other birds.
