- Comments: "Mostly red head as in Red-breasted Sapsucker, but with bold, long, white facial stripe running from nares to just below the eye, then obscured below the auricular by red feathering, then resuming as white stripe on side of neck; black feathering on chin atypical of either putative parental species; prominent black and white on nape (much more than would be expected on Red-breasted, and more typical of Red-naped), with irregular black smudging on rear crown; black ocular feathering; red below essentially restricted to throat (not extending to breast), where fairly sharply cut off, and vaguely bordered by partial blackish collar, which was more prominent on the right side, and only vaguely indicated on the left, with only slight and somewhat faint amount of red feathering extending below the collar and onto the breast; back pattern, with white arranged into two rather distinct "racing stripes" down either side, more suggestive of Red-naped than of Yellow-bellied. Photos to follow."
