The annual Loon Watch at Taughannock, originally scheduled for this Sunday (11/9), has been postponed due to weather to the following Sunday (11/16), starting at 6:43am.
The watch takes place near the point on the southeast side of the creek. Take the main entrance to Taughannock Falls State Park, then hug left towards the northernmost parking lot (42.5478, -76.5982). Google map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/i5f9CwR2V4xUoV25A
This is an annual event to look for migrating loons (predominantly Common) that head south for winter. Initially, there will be flights of loons from northerly portions of Cayuga Lake, and by 7:30 a.m. we will see loons coming over from Lake Ontario and points north. You might also witness other migrating waterfowl like scoters and Long-tailed Ducks, as well as the occasional Red-throated Loon. Migration is a weather-dependent event; on good north-wind days you might see thousands of loons migrating over Cayuga Lake. North wind means cold and blustery, so dress properly for the weather. Bring warm gloves and hats. Also carry warm liquids to keep you warm.
The precise times are part of a protocol that counts the loons in 15-minute periods beginning 15 minutes before sunrise at 6:58.
Thanks to Jared Dawson, Scott Sutcliffe, and Stephanie Herrick for leading this year's watch.
