Today, Nov 13, the male Hepatic Tanager has returned for at least its EIGHTH winter to private property in Tierrasanta. So far no sign of last winter's female that was with it. Given the access situation, in past years I have tried to schedule one or two group showings of the bird during the winter, if it can be arranged and if the bird is being reasonably cooperative, which is sometimes not the case. I may do that again later this season, but the fact that the male with easy public access in Wing Street Canyon is back for its third winter means folks should go look for that bird instead.
Yesterday, I spent quite a bit of time at Sweetwater Reservoir, trying to re-find the Wood Stork reported there the previous day, with no success. I did see continuing 5 Greater White-fronted and a Cackling Goose, a new adult Snow Goose, 3 Hooded Mergansers, a late N. Rough-winged Swallow, and the pair of Bald Eagles working on a nest.
