Hi folks,
Thanks to a remarkable level of interest this year, the Sheldon CBC on Sheldon NWR scheduled for Dec 19th is maxed out, in terms of lodging for volunteers.
If anyone really, REALLY wants to join, you're still welcome but you might need to either: (a) camp out at the Virgin Valley campground, or (b) stage from the nearest motels (mainly Denio Junction which is 20 miles away, or Winnemucca which is 100 miles away).
For the Hart Mountain CBC (on Hart Mtn National Antelope Refuge in nearby Oregon), we're also bumping up against the limit on lodging capacity.
For Hart Mtn, the nearest other lodging is in Lakeview (about 60 miles but most of that is mountain driving, with a good chance of snow and/or ice on the roads). For the truly hardy, it's sometimes possible to camp up at Hot Springs Campground, but the road into the campground can often be drifted shut.
All of this is assuming that the government shutdown ends by early December. If it doesn't, then we might not have access to the refuge bunkhouses, and camping or distant motels will be the only options.
Good birding, Joel
